Berry and Ginger Morning Shake

Most berry shakes taste the same after a fortnight. A thumbnail of fresh ginger fixes that permanently — it adds heat and sharpness that cuts through the sweetness.

Ingredients

  • 2 scoops Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix, Berry
  • 250ml cold water or coconut water
  • 3/4 cup frozen mixed berries
  • 1cm piece fresh ginger, peeled
  • Juice of half a lime
  • 3 ice cubes

Method

  1. Blend the ginger with the liquid on its own for 10 seconds first. This stops you biting into a fibrous chunk later.
  2. Add berries, lime juice and ice, then the Formula 1 on top.
  3. Blend 30 seconds until completely smooth.

The lime matters

Acid does for fruit what salt does for chocolate. Without the lime this is pleasant; with it, the berry flavour goes from muted to bright. Half a lime, no more — a whole one tips it into sour.

Variations

Coconut water instead of plain water adds potassium and a rounder flavour, useful if you have trained the night before. If you want it thicker, add a quarter of a frozen banana, but be aware it will dull the ginger.
